THE INVISIBLE HAND

CHAPTER SIX

Donna strode ahead of Nab down the narrow track leading to the city. She wasn’t about to sit around huddled in a cave like some Stone Age refugee, when there was a nice, modern city—hopefully with some shoe stores, sitting out there somewhere.

“You are one stubborn lady.” Nab muttered resentfully, as he plodded along behind her. The path through the barren wastes was often so narrow, they had to walk single file.

“And obstinate. Yeah, I know.” Donna flung back at him. She paused to rest a moment. They’d been walking steadily for about an hour.

“I’m telling you again, Donna. It’s simply too dangerous to try to get to the city.” Nab grumbled. “The closer you get, the more aggressive them creatures become. And, there’s a lot less places to hide, as well.”

“Why are you here then, if you didn’t want to come?” She demanded, turning to look at her new friend.

“I didn’t think that ginger attitude of yours would agree with those creature’s digestion’s. So I came along to make sure they’d keep away from you.” Nab retorted.

“My ginger what?” Donna asked. She cocked her head and gave Nab one of her looks. “Are you taking the mickey out of me because of the colour of my hair?”

For a moment, the two of them just stood there, glaring at each other. Then, they both burst out laughing.

“Listen to us, will you?” Donna smiled. “All alone, miles from nowhere on an alien planet, and we’re arguing like little kids.”

“Yeah, well, sorry about the ginger remark. I didn’t mean it. I guess I’m worried about them creatures finding us. Sometimes they scare easy, like that creature that attacked you, earlier. But sometimes, Donna, nothin’ scares ‘em. Nothin’ at all. They’re so hungry, they would attack anything. I saw one of them trying to eat a big rock, once.” Nab said, taking her hand.

“You know, I think you’re doing a bang up job Donna, handling all of this. It’s almost…”

“Almost what?” Donna asked, grasping Nab’s hand warmly.

“Almost as if you’ve seen alien worlds before.” He said, shaking his head. “Not that that’s possible, of course.”

“Well, actually…” Donna answered.

But, before she could finish, there was a great roar from above them. They looked up to see a creature standing on the cliff top. It was man-shaped, but this one was covered with yellow and red fish-like scales, and had a head like a crocodile.

As they watched, it pushed a big boulder off of the cliff-top, which came hurtling down at Donna and Nab with terrifying speed.

The Doctor opened his eyes. The ceiling above him was drab grey metal, lit by a single light. He was lying on a narrow cot. The Doctor turned his head, and saw he was in a barred cell. Outside the cell, was a network of pipes and various types of grimy machinery.

Swinging his feet to the floor, he could feel a faint vibration. On impulse, the Doctor felt around in his pockets. Rolling his eyes, he sighed. Every one of the Doctor’s pockets were empty, except for five pence someone had missed.

Taking out the small silver coin, the Doctor dropped it on the floor. He raised an eyebrow.

Just then, a door clanked open and the sound of booted footsteps echoed through the chamber. Four heavily armed humanoid guards, dressed in black combat gear, approached the cell. Behind them stood a familiar figure. It was Sipar, the rainbow coloured Retrosaurous woman from the shop.

“Ah. Something tells me this really isn’t going to be good.” The Doctor muttered.
