THE LAST MAN SHE'LL EVER LOVE
“The Last Man (She’ll Ever Love)”
Eddie didn’t know what the hell he’d gotten himself into. Sure, he loved Jane. He’d secretly loved her almost from the day they’d met on her first day at the Diane Roberts Show.
He’d been writer/producer on the show for six months, and as he was prone to do, he’d worked his way through several of the available ladies in the office. Most were one-nighters, a few had lasted through a weekend. Only one had lasted longer than that, and she he’d met outside the office.
Rebecca.
But when Jane had walked in the door, Eddie had somehow known things were going to be different. Maybe not immediately, and certainly not without fighting it. Still, Eddie knew there would always be Jane.
Beautiful, funny, smart-ass Jane.
He’d watched on the sidelines as Jane fell into her relationship with their co-worker, Ray Brown. He’d seen the highs and lows Jane went through, and when Ray left her, Eddie had held her in his arms all night long, comforting her.
He grinned as he remembered ‘copping a feel’ as she slid out of bed the next morning, only to insult him by telling him she knew he’d ‘show his spots’ eventually.
Well, maybe she’d been partially right, but he still thought the whole “new cow/old cow” theory was a bunch of bullshit.
It hurt him when he found out that Jane had made up the whole thing herself…that there’d never been a ‘Dr. Marie Charles,’ and that she’d kept him in the dark about the truth of it until she admitted it on live television.
Still, she’d followed him from the studio, stopped him on the street, and told him she’d found a new man to love, just as he’d said she would. Him.
Him…Eddie Alden. Man about town, the one who loved women, only to leave them when it became too uncomfortable. Jane loved him, and God help him, he loved her right back.
So they’d agreed to give their relationship a chance. It had actually been nice, Eddie considered, these past several months. They were approaching their first year together, and it hadn’t ceased to amaze him that they had remained happy together all this time. He’d never lasted in a relationship this long.
He’d never loved a woman this much, either.
Now this….
Just that morning, after he and Jane had made love one more time before getting ready for work, she told him something that completely rocked his world off its axis.
“Eddie…I’m pregnant.”
