HUNTERS OF THE NIGHT
Hi everyone! I wanted to redo the original Hunters of the Night so please bear with me. Thank you reviewers for the reviews. I hope that you will agree with my actions for this story.
Chapter 1 – Beginning
It would be nice if this place was used for something better than drunken parties that go on until the wee hours of the morning, Gabrielle thought. Then maybe I wouldn’t have to spend a whole night cleaning up the mess.
Gabrielle sighed as she looked over the ballroom. Broken glass littered the floor along with confetti. Large puddles of wine and liquor were pooled along the walls and the green velvet curtains were stained with them. Tables were overturned; some had legs broken off while others were completely destroyed. The only things that could be salvaged were the curtains, though only to be torn up ad used as rags. New ones would have to be ordered and put up which was a job in itself.
Better get started, she thought. The first task would be getting the curtains down. With a heavy sigh she walked to the first window.
…
With only the floor left to clean Gabrielle took a break to stretch her weary muscles. As soon as she sat down on the grand piano bench one of the large oak doors opened. She sprang off the bench as Luke, the butler, appeared.
“Hello Luke,” Gabrielle said.
“Hello Brie. Master Drake has an urgent task for you and he said that if you don’t come then you’ll get ten lashes!”
Gabrielle rolled her eyes. Drake was a very demanding and mean man. If one of his servants got out of line then they were punished with the whip. Her curiosity had gotten the better of her a couple of times and she had gotten lashes for punishment. The worst part of all was that he was her uncle, without an uncle’s love. He told her that when she was little that her parents were killed and she was brought here to live. Ever since then she worked as a servant. Her parents were never mentioned after that. She suspected that he had a problem with them because he always looked at her with disgust.
One of these days I will find out who my parents are, or were.
“I’ll go,” she said to Luke.
Once Luke left she took a look at the ballroom. I’ll just have to finish the floor later. She left the room and made her way to Uncle Drake’s study. Once there she knocked quietly on the door.
“Come in,” came a gruffly voice.
She opened the door to find Uncle Drake sitting at his desk shuffling paperwork.
“Sit,” he commanded. She did so. “A very important man will be arriving tonight. He will be staying in the large suite on the third floor. You need to get it ready for him. Make it very comfortable, I want to do business with him.” He paused and gave her a look. “You are dismissed.”
Gabrielle nodded her head and left his office. Drake’s business was not something she liked to think about. He was involved in a black market and didn’t mind doing whatever was necessary to got what he wanted. At the third floor cleaning closet she gathered what she needed and headed toward the suite.
…
It was midnight when Gabrielle finished getting the rooms ready. The guest hadn’t shown up yet. Oh well. Yawning, she walked down the long corridor that led to her room. The ballroom floor will have to wait.
Once in her room she slid out of her tattered work dress and looked at the mirror and was pleased. For a 22 year old she was slim but had sturdy arms and legs. Thinking of her past years she couldn’t remember of anytime that she wasn’t fit. Must be all the chores. Before putting on her night gown Gabrielle took off the one thing given to her by her parents. It was a cross but it had vine carvings on it with bats and fangs tangled in them. I wonder which one of my parents I look like the most, she thought, stroking the designs. Pulling her nightgown on she slipped into bed. It’s a full moon tonight, she noticed. When she was about to lay her head down on her pillow she saw a huge bat-like figure fly past her window, but her eyes closed and she fell into a deep sleep.
