THE FUTURE LIES WITHIN
Chapter 4: Sleeping Arrangements
As soon as she saw Dr. Jean Grey, Heidi felt instantly relieved. Maybe now that she was here, and could tell them about the danger they may be facing, her dreams would stop and her life could go back to some semblance of normal. She suddenly realized the Dr. Grey had asked her what her name was, and shook her head. “I’m sorry, my name is Heidi,” she said as she reached out to shake her hand. Jean shook her hand, and introduced Logan in a more formal way. Still undone by his manhandling her, Heidi offered him a curt smile then the three of them headed back to the mansion with Logan walking behind the two women. Something about her was different than most women he met, and whether it was the way she caught him off guard when he caught her, or simply who she was, he knew he wanted to try and get to know her better.
As they walked to the mansion, Jean asked Heidi how she had arrived and when she found out that Heidi’s car was parked on the side road she asked the young woman if she minded letting Logan move it within the safety of the gated Mansion.
“I suppose that would be alright,” she said reaching her hand into her jeans pocked and pulling out the keys. She let Jean have them and watched as she told Logan to bring her car to the garage. Once he was on his way, they too began their short Journey.
In the kitchen Jean offered her a cup of tea, then realized how tired the young woman looked. “Why don’t you stay here for the night, we have a few spare rooms, and I want to have the professor present before we talk,” she said.
It took a brief moment, but Heidi realized the man she was referring to was likely the founder of the school. “If you are sure it won’t be any trouble,” she replied.
Jean led her upstairs and to the left of the stairs. The turned right, and she soon found herself in a large room, complete with a bathroom just to the left of the door. “There are extra blankets and towels in here,” Jean said opening up a closet door. After she showed Heidi those she walked over to a dresser and opened it. “And extra night cloths in here, they haven’t been worn yet,” she reassured.
Heidi thanked her, and after she left, she walked over to the dresser and suddenly realized how horrible she looked. She still wore the dark baseball cap on her head, with all of her hair tucked inside. Taking it off, Heidi leaned her head forward and shook it back and forth until her hair wasn’t as matted then threw her head back and used her fingers to flatten it a bit. As she was starting to get undressed someone knocked at her door, and after pulling her jeans back up, and pulling her black shirt down, she opened it finding Logan there with her keys. She took them from his hands, thanked him and shut the door in his face, too tired to deal with men, even if he happened to be a nice guy.
Morning arrived with the sun shining in her face, and for a moment Heidi lingered in the double bed she was sleeping in. For the first time in weeks she hadn’t had any troubling dreams and she felt refreshed. As she was about to go back to sleep she realized where she was and sat up quickly getting out of bed. As she walked into the bathroom to have a shower she found clean cloths lying on the chair which was placed next to the door. The cloths were not her own and as she held them up she realized they were her size, and new. For a moment she tried to figure out how they knew her clothing size, then remembering where she was, she just let it go.
Having a shower was refreshing and as she finished getting dressed someone knocked at her door. She suddenly remembered how she had shut the door in Logan’s face, and hoped that it wasn’t him. When she opened the door she found a young girl waiting for her. The girl was almost as tall as she, with a stripe of white hair on her right side.
“My name is Rogue, and if you are ready I will take you to breakfast,” she said.
“I’m glad to meet you,” Heidi said as she walked to the bed and sat down. She slipped on her sandals which she had worn last night, and when she was ready Rogue led her downstairs.
The dining area was relatively empty, only a few people were eating breakfast, and again Heidi was relieved not to see Logan among them.
“Sit down and I’ll bring you breakfast,” Rogue said, ready to be polite to their company. Heidi told her she just wanted a bowl of cereal and in a few moments she brought that out. “If you don’t need anything more then I need to get to class,” she said.
“Thank you for fixing my breakfast,” Heidi said a moment before the girl disappeared. As she began to eat, Jean walked into the room followed by a young boy who didn’t look anymore than ten years old.
“I see that you found the cloths we left for you,” she said as she sat down and Jake left to go to his class. They had been talking about using his powers unsupervised the other night when he was eating peanut butter on a spoon with Logan, and Jean was hopeful that he would listen. He was still learning to control them and without her there or the professor his use of his powers on his own was not a good idea.
Heidi was surprised to see a boy so young away at a private school, or for that matter able to manifest any sort of power. Jean seemed to know what she was thinking and told her a little about him.
“He is doing better about controlling his anger, but he still needs our guidance,” she said. Heidi was finished eating by that time and carried her bowl and glass into the kitchen. She rinsed them out and put them in the dishwasher, and then followed Jean through the mansion to a large office. Inside a man sitting in a wheelchair was waiting for them and after Jean shut the door she introduced Heidi to Professor Xavier.
“It nice to meet you,” Heidi said as she sat down in a near by chair next to Jean ready to tell them about Max and his plans so she could be on her way. She had no desire to see Logan, and yet part of her did, and for some reason that was frightening to her.
Charles watched his guest but did not pry into her thoughts. “Now what is it that brings you to my school,” he said catching her attention.
Again Heidi was pulled back to the present and took a breath letting it out. “I work for a man named Maxamillion Simons. He is a builder a few years older than I am. I’m not sure why, but he seems to have a certain dislike for Mutants, and last night we were flown out to a site in Connecticut where he unveiled a Sentinel. Does that mean anything to you?” Heidi asked.
Charles had been around long enough to see a great many things, and was aware of what she was talking about. “Robots designed to hunt down and destroy Mutants. Jean we need to hold a meeting in the lab straight away,” he said. When Jean left, Heidi stood up also ready to leave but Professor Xavier wheeled beside her. “Heidi is there anything else you want to discuss?” he asked, able to sense that she did want to ask him something.
She turned around to face him. “Every since I’ve become involved with Max I’ve been having dreams.” She sighed and sat back down willing to tell him a bit more, needing to talk about them with someone she felt would understand.
In the Lab the X-men including their two newest members Bobby and Rogue were waiting for the Professor to make an appearance. When he finally arrived he was alone, and told them what he had learned from Heidi about the Sentinels. It had been a long time since they had been bothered by their kind, but from what Heidi had told him, this new breed was bigger stronger and more powerful. “We will need to keep guard, and have an evacuation plan ready if the worse happens,” Charles said.
“So we are just going to wait for this man to send his Sentinels out to attack us?” Scott asked. He knew as well as the rest of them that they couldn’t create a scene without just cause, and this attack was personal, against every mutant everywhere, not just them.
Logan backed Scott up, he wasn’t one to just sit around and wait. “I think we should find out where this guy lives and pay him a visit,” Logan said ready for some action.
Charles had anticipated such a reaction and answered them. “According to the information Heidi gave me this is a well known man. We would be drawing attention to ourselves if we made a move to earlier. For now we need to start planning for this attack, and we will need to keep watch over his activities. Scott you and Storm take the jet and fly out to Connecticut. Heidi has left the generally area where he is building his mall. Find out all you can about these Sentinels. You will need to wait until tonight to go out there,” he added. After that the meeting was over and as he began to wheel out of the room, Logan walked over to him.
“What about the woman?” he asked.
“She is on her way back to her home. I offered her a choice to stay with us, but she isn’t ready to give up the life she already has,” he said as he wheeled out of the room toward Cerebro. Logan had a feeling the Professor knew something else about that woman, and he wanted to know what it was.
In her apartment Heidi sat on her tan sofa lost in thought. When she explained to the Professor about her abilities, she never once thought about being a Mutant. Now she knew that she was, and was torn on what to do. Charles Xavier told her this was a dangerous time for her and that she would be safer with them than on her own. For Heidi even the thought of staying there was a threat. She had her own life here, even if she did work for a man wanting to kill her kind. She looked at the clock on the wall and realized that it was time to go get Anna from the airport. Grateful for the distraction, Heidi went into her room and pulled her hair back into a pony tail. When she was ready she left her apartment, hailed a cab and left for La Guardia.
Later that evening, Anna and Heidi sat in her apartment, and as they talked Anna noticed something was bothering her friend. “Well enough about me and my trip, what has been happening with you?” she asked hoping her friend would talk to her.
Heidi wasn’t sure if she wanted to tell Anna about what she had discovered today at Xavier’s School. If Max was on to her, which she was relatively sure he was Anna might be in danger. “Oh not too much really, it’s just been incredibly busy at work. I’m sorry we can’t go to the Lake,” she said. Anna just smiled at her and seemed to understand just as she always did. After watching a movie, Heidi saw her friend out the door then started to get ready for bed.
That night as she slept, Heidi kept having dreams about a man, and kept waking herself up before she could see who it was. Finally she got out of bed and walked into her living room over to one of the Windows over looking the park. From the 45th Floor, Heidi didn’t hear as much of the city activities as a person who lived closer to the ground floor.
When she finally went back to sleep, she only had a few hours before she had to go to work and was relieved when her dreams were once again the peaceful ones which allowed her to rest.
